Farmers Markets
There’s nothing like fresh and local produce, especially amongst the atmosphere of a local farmers market! I have been going to the Farm Direct Community Market S.A near our home every Saturday morning since they opened a year ago. I honestly look forward to it each week.
Our family eats a lot of fruit and veg and so buying it from the supermarket becomes very expensive and to be honest, I’m not often happy with the quality of the produce. A little over a year ago we heard about a farmers market opening near our home so we went and checked it out. I was so pleased to find both Australian and South Australian produce at extremely reasonable prices! I was so grateful because I was able to get all the vegetables and fruits I needed at less than half the cost of what I was paying at the supermarket! Unfortunately there is a price war going on amongst major grocery chains and our local produce markets. It makes me want to back the local markets to give these guys a fighting chance.
I love markets! There’s nothing like the market atmosphere of trolley carts bumping along the lane ways, the smells of home made foods, the sounds of multicultural families buying their local produce and the fact you get to know the stall holders from chatting to them each week. I love seeing the families talk about the produce they’re buying, it educates our children on nutrition and allows families to eat healthier as the produce is a lot more affordable. It also helps build community sustainability and gets us back to old roots. It’s such a treat for me each Saturday morning.
By shopping at local farmers markets you are provided with an opportunity to access quality, fresh produce whilst supporting local farmers and directly putting money back into local communities. I encourage you to find a farmers market near your home and give it a go!
