Le Vecchie Mura Restaurant, Italy
A few years ago Pete and I fulfilled my all time dream and visited Tuscany during a holiday to Europe. I was really worried about finding food I would be able to eat and enjoy without feeling sick while there and I really didn’t want the hunt for ‘safe’ food to detract from our dream holiday.
I got very good at asking the waiting staff at every place we visited if they had ‘senza glutien!” While staying in San Gimignano we came across a beautiful looking restaurant and decided to go in and ask if they had anything that was “senza glutien”. To my absolute delight the waiter replied with a big grin “Yes yes we have senza glutien menu for you!”. With that he skipped over to the counter and bought me back my very own gluten free menu with gluten free pasta options as well as other main meal options.
I ordered my gluten free meal and a few minutes later they bought my husband out a small basket with home made bread rolls and bread sticks. They looked amazing and I sat there watching him with a slightly jealous look on my face. A few minutes later the same excitable waiter reappeared at our table with another small basket and placed it in front of me. It had 2 very warm freshly baked gluten free bread rolls!!!! I wanted to jump up out of my chair and hug him but I restrained myself and instead whispered to Pete “We’re coming here every night!” And we did!
The food was delicious and it didn’t upset my tummy at all. I had one bread roll because I was on holiday and because it was such a treat, however it was made with yeast and as yeast is definitely not my friend I decided it was best I avoid having too much of it but if yeast is not an issue for you, enjoy the treat!
Obviously Italy is known for its authentic pasta and I honestly felt that I may not experience that because of my dietary requirements but this restaurant changed that for me and allowed me to still have a wonderful dining experience, tasting the pasta dishes in all their splendour without the gluten! I’m forever grateful for this considerate little restaurant hidden in a tiny little village in Tuscany for thinking of me and my fellow sensitive belly friends.
A hundred and one kisses and hugs to you Le Vecchie Mura for making my dream holiday that little bit more special!
